What are you working for?

Posted on January 17, 2006

Few days ago, on a windy day, one huge window (2 by 2 meters) just broke and fall out of the building where I’m working (from the sixth level directly on the street). As you can imagine, that’s not really good if you are just crossing by or standing near the building walls. In fact, a 2 by 2 sheet of glass falling from the sky would kill you on the spot. Lukly, nobody was hurt this time.

And just this morning I’ve received one of Zig Ziglar’s newsletters about the importance of the family as a way to improve your life. It says that a beautiful relation with your family will give you the freedom to concentrate on your professional life as well. Thinking in reverse, it seems that also a bad professional life will surely affect your family life.

Getting back to the “Window from the sky story”, I’m sure that if somebody would have been injured that day, someone would have been called liable and probably even facing prison. And who would be called guilty? I assume it would be the person who actually put the glass windows on the building, and more exactly the worker. Ok, now let’s assume that you are that worker, and you are installing glass windows in any new building, and for some reason or another an accident happens and here you are, guilty. And probably facing prison.

I bet this is something that you don’t get in your job description and you assume it will never happen. And if you are an entrepreneur, nobody tells you that sometimes family is more important than the business, because you always assume everything will go well with your family forever.

But in a second, your life could turn upside down, there is no telling if or when this can happen. And you are saying that all the work you are putting into your business is for your family? But when was the last time you actually had some time to spend with your family?

OK, I think this story is quite negative and sad. But what I’m trying to say it’s too important to be easily understood if said in a positive way. And here it is: no matter how hard you are working, always remember that you are working for your family (or maybe yourself) and there is no point in doing this if you are not going to keep a good balance and spend some time with your family. You don’t live just for work, but you are just working for a living.

Your business might come and go, but your family will always be there to support you. Keep the balance right and your life will be better.
