Some will find business opportunities in the economic downturn

Posted on September 22, 2008

With the US economy slowing down, everybody has to deal with low demand, increasing production costs and bigger bills. If you read these 2 articles Doing Business in Eastern Europe and Doing business in Jamaica, questions is if investing abroad wouldn’t be better. Or at least if selling abroad is not a good solution to keep sales up.

If selling abroad sounds like a good idea, there are companies like Shipito.com that are basically Mail Forwarding services that play a dual role: help buyers purchase products from US and help US companies sell abroad. Of course, these services where available for years, but the current economy downturn just gave Shipito the opportunity to position itself as a solution to slow sales and easy export needs.

In a press release, John Vanhara, President of Shipito says: “many small businesses may want to look to expanding globally. “While it is true that many sectors of the U.S. economy are experiencing a slowdown that is impacting many, there are still opportunities to sell products abroad,” says Vanhara. “Many small businesses hesitate to take the plunge because they think shipping internationally can be a huge headache, filled with risk, but that is not necessarily the case if you know what you are doing or can find someone who does.”

Companies like Shipito are experienced in dealing with the required documentation and cutting through the red tape. We have set up programs for small business owners that allow them to successfully ship products internationally without the usual frustrations shipping can bring. For our clients, shipping internationally is no longer an obstacle and they can focus their attentions on the development of a new marketplace.”

Of course that when the economy is going down, it’s a bad time for everybody, life gets harder and money are scarce. But the beauty of entrepreneurship is that at a basic level entrepreneurship means finding needs and fulfill them. And the economy status is just the environment with opportunities and challenges that you have to use and turn in your favour.

An option I’ve been using with success is http://www.bongous.com
    There’s no set-up fee or per-package fee
Bongo will set you up with a US address so that you can make purchases from US based online retailers…even if they don’t ship internationally.
Their personal shopper is useful also if the site doesn’t accept intl credit cards
