How to deal with suppliers in Romania
Posted on August 10, 2006
Last week I gave an interview on how I’ve started Energybyte a year and a half ago with a very tight budget and about Entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe in general.
Recent and renewed experiences are making me now to write a little bit about one of the subjects: is it easy to be an entrepreneur in Romania or to run a business? Well, what about if I say one simple thing: YOU CAN’T THRUST YOUR SUPPLIERS HERE.
Basically you run a business and you need customers and suppliers. Now, if at some point you really depend on a supplier to get your job done, man you are in trouble. It doesn’t matter if it’s the phone company, if it’s a software distributor, or a toilet paper vendor. They won’t deliver their stuff, they won’t keep the same price, and the quality is a mess. You will need complex contracts, lots of phone discussions and a lot of calm. And secondary alternatives.
But how bad is it? It’s really bad in terms of stress, because you don’t really have any control over it.
Of course there are some solutions:
- make strong contracts
- never rely on a single supplier
- add a risk margin to whatever you’re selling
- keep calm
- warn your customer about things that could go wrong and are out of your reach
- have a good lawyer and legal advisor
So can you do business in Romania? Yes, good business, but have a local advisor stand by your side.
