How much “life” do you lose by not having the right tools?
Posted on March 19, 2005
Just the other day, as the weather started to warm up the first time this year, I’ve decided to take out my classic bike for a run. And suddenly, I remember the last year struggles to fix the engine. The engine is nothing fancy, plain old 2 strokes, single carburetor. So far so good, until the moment I decided to rebuild the engine, which at the moment looked like a simple half a day job. And it was, up until the moment I realized some new parts don’t actually really fit, and they need some adjustments. Naturally, I didn’t have any “adjustment” tools, as I wasn’t planning for any surprises. Well, it turned out, my half-day repair was in fact a 2 days killer struggle while trying to find alternative and not so fancy solutions.
I guess this is the same in Web Development. Have you ever considered how much time from your only life do you spend not having or not knowing you don’t have the best tools for your job? This matter came obvious to me in my almost 3 years of working at InterAKT Online. First I discovered that even for a simple site, a non-programmer can’t even place the HTML tags right. Its not complicated after all, but in the beginning you simply don’t know how to write those “words” - the syntax.
After placing my first “Hello Word” page on the Internet, I’ve got to the heavy part: going dynamic.
Right in that moment, I realized that the tools we were building at InterAKT started to make sense: Dreamweaver extensions that actually generate dynamic code. You just have to have a basic understanding of what needs to be built, then you go to the InterAKT solutions page: you will find the right tool for almost anything you might need to go dynamic: file upload, Query builder, form builder, just check yourself.
You’ll find tools for dynamic sites, e-commerce sites, for intranets, or just to increase your productivity. Or you could just go for one of the ready-made application templates that could be the starting point for your next project.
Well, a lot of people discovered the InterAKT tools: they are going to several conferences each year, and they are Macromedia partners. Everything is going well for the guys, which means their clients are happy.
Now that I’ve decided to work for another company I came to think how much time of my only life I would have spent not knowing there are tools to do my job? How much “life” do you spend not knowing there are tools for your job?
