Entrepreneurship: do things better
Posted on January 14, 2006
Each day you can see new businesses starting (or at least this is happening in Romania). From what I’ve noticed, most of them offer already existent services, and in a way if you are going to open a bakery for example, it’s quite obvious that there are other bakeries in your town providing more or less the sale thing. Or if you want to make a gym, you can be quite sure that there are other entrepreneurs who thought about opening a gym before you, and they actually did it. There are relatively little new ideas in the business these days. Everybody have ideas, but far more less are actually doing something.
So if everything has been done before, why would you give it a try? Why do people leave their jobs in their corporate and “safe” 9 to 5 offices for a much more riskier alternative?
Because, the entrepreneur by it’s nature it’s a little different that the rest of the people. Entrepreneurs think that whatever they would like to do, they can do it better. Why would you open a new DVD rental? Because you believe you can do better that the others in town. Why would you open a repair shop? Because you can repair car better. There is not very clear what exactly you can do better. Maybe you don’t actually repair cars better, but maybe you have people skills and this will bring you more customers. Maybe you don’t have better DVD’s to rent, but maybe your shop is better placed. Maybe your bread isn’t better but is cheaper.
So why would you start something that has already been done? Because there is something inside you that says I can do things better!
PS: sometimes if you can’t do things better, working harder will help too
