Doing business

Posted on 30 March 2008

I was getting myself ready to write about Entrepreneurship in Brazil and dedicate it to Cris Zimermann from Virtual entrepreneur when I found this article: Brazilians are among most entrepreneurial . It says that “The total entrepreneurial activity index (TEA) in the country grew from the 11.6% registered in 2006 to 12.72% in 2007, the equivalent to 15 million enterprises”

Anyway, the thing is that if you are looking at this screenshot (I’ve copied it from there, thanks)

you will see that none of the so called “developed countries is there”. I don’t know yet why, but the good news is that the article is based on the findings of the 2007 GEM research (look for the PDF file to download) written by Niels Bosma, Kent Jones, Erkko Autio and Jonathan Levie. Now I need to read this, and I’m sure it will be interesting to find out what’s special in the countries in the top (I know that Romania usually ranks amongst the bottom of the list, should check on that too).

Until then, I got some other articles from other “far away places” (again if you are in Eastern Europe, everything besides Europe is far away):

  • $30.5 Million Allocated to Promote Entrepreneurship in Jamaica – hmmm, interesting to find out how things go over there; “The project aims to assist the micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to make a meaningful and visible contribution to industrial and economic development by increasing their competitiveness in the Agro-processing and Craft sub-sectors.”
  • Africa – Open For Business – a very interesting overview on doing business over there. If reading the plain words over the African realities is not enough, I suggest watching the Blood Diamond movie – yes, it’s not a documentary but after watching it I’ve left home thinking no matter how hard my life is, it’s very easy compared to what’s going on in some parts of the World.

I don’t know, I’m documenting myself to write some more on entrepreneurship failure, a subject that gets far too little attention over the internet, and until I will have the complete picture I can say that whenever you feel down, read about the entrepreneurial realities in worse places and you will realise life is not so bad for an entrepreneur elsewhere. Did you know that in some countries you can’t start a business unless you are a citizen? And still foreign entrepreneurship exists over there anyway!

Great resources. I know here in the States, minorities (we’re one too) from all over encompass a good percentage of startup companies. So you’ll probably find even more entrepreneurs within those countries who immigrated. It’s awesome to see at least 1 in 10 folks work as entrepreneurs on your list.
